Roche: European Commission approves flu treatment Xofluza

(CercleFinance.com) - Roche said on Monday that the European Commission has approved its drug Xofluza for the treatment of influenza, accepting the first new influenza antiviral in almost 20 years.

Basel-based Roche said that the executive arm of the European Union has approved the pill for the treatment of uncomplicated flu in patients aged 12 years and above.

Xofluza, which is already available in over 30 countries, has also been approved for post-exposure prophylaxis of influenza, the drugmaker said.

With its rapid reduction in viral replication, the treatment can help patients recover more quickly, Roche pointed out.

The WHO estimates that up to 72,000 people in Europe die prematurely due to influenza-related causes every year.

Roche also announced on Monday the launch of two new automated digital pathology algorithms for breast cancer to help determine the best treatment for each patient.

The image analysis algorithms use artificial intelligence to support pathologists in making faster and more accurate patient diagnoses in breast cancer, the Swiss biopharmaceutical company said.
