Umicore: industrialisation phase of a new battery

(CercleFinance.com) - On Monday Belgium's Umicore announced that it has started the industrialisation of its manganese-rich cathode-active materials (HLM) technology, targeting commercial production and use in electric vehicles (EVs) by 2026.


The specialty metals specialist says that this HLM battery offers a better total cost of ownership than the LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery, with greater range, equivalent safety, much more reliable state of charge control and better recyclability.

Future HLM production is planned at Umicore's battery materials plants in Korea and Poland, which currently produce NMC-based cathode active materials, as well as at the planned plant in Canada.
