According to SpendingPulse - which provides insights into spending trends across all payment types, including cash and check - electronics and appliances were up 4.6 percent, while the home furniture and furnishings category grew 1.3 percent.
Apparel saw a slight gain of one percent year over year, but the category experienced stronger than expected e-commerce growth, up 17 percent year-on-year.
Department stores saw overall sales decline 1.8 percent, despite online sales up 6.9 percent.
E-commerce took a bigger piece of the holiday pie, in particular specialty apparel up 17% and electronics up 10.7%, SpendingPulse said.
