Intel: sells NAND business to Korea's SK hynix
(CercleFinance.com) - Intel said on Tuesday that it has agreed to sell its NAND memory and storage business to South Korea's SK hynix for 9 billion dollars.
The deal includes the NAND SSD business, which has become a main component of data centers in recent years due to the limitations of traditional hard disk drives.
The deal also includes the NAND flash component and wafer business, along with the Dalian NAND memory manufacturing facility in China, the companies said.
"With decelerating demand growth, we have been opining for some time that the NAND flash industry will move to a consolidation phase from currently 7 players," UBS analysts commented this morning.
For the record, the market currently has seven players - Samsung, SK Hynix, Kioxia, Western Digital, Micron, Intel, and YMTC.
Intel said that it will invest the proceeds from the sale in its long-term growth priorities, such as artificial intelligence, 5G networking and intelligent, autonomous technologies.
