Intel: to exit 5G smartphone business
(CercleFinance.com) - Intel announced on Tuesday that it intends to exit the 5G smartphone modem business in order to focus on 5G network infrastructure business.
In a statement, Intel explains that it has become "apparent" that there is no clear path to profitability for its smartphone modem business.
The chipmaker said that it will continue to meet current customer commitments for its existing 4G smartphone modem product line, but does not expect to launch new 5G smartphone products, including those originally planned for 2020.
