GM: to manufacture 30,000 ventilators by end-August
(CercleFinance.com) - General Motors has won a contract worth 489 million dollars from the US Department of Health for the delivery of 30,000 ventilators to the Strategic National Stockpile by the end of August.
This is the first contract for ventilator production rated under the Defense Production Act to the US auto giant, which is expected to provide a production schedule allowing for the delivery of 6,132 ventilators by 1 June.
In a statement on Wednesday, GM said that it is working with partner Ventec Life Systems, an American medical device firm, with "speed" and "urgency" to provide the critical care ventilators that treat seriously ill patients.
GM said it plans to deploy its purchasing and manufacturing capability as part of the deal.
