Ford: a coordinated effort with 3M and GE
(CercleFinance.com) - Ford is working with diversified US manufacturer 3M and conglomerate GE to accelerate the production of respirators for healthcare workers and ventilators for coronavirus patients, the carmaker said on Tuesday.
The 117-year old company is collaborating with 3M to increase the manufacturing capacity of powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) designs and working jointly to develop a new respirator that could be produced at a Ford facility, it said.
Ford is also working with GE Healthcare to expand production of a simplified version of GE's existing ventilator design to support patients with respiratory failure or who have difficulty breathing.
The auto giant said that, in cooperation with the UAW, it plans to assemble over 100,000 plastic face shields per week at a Ford manufacturing site to help medical professionals, factory workers and store clerks.
Ford will also leverage its in-house 3D printing capability to produce disposable respirators for healthcare workers.
