Boeing: cuts 737 MAX production after crashes

(CercleFinance.com) - Last Friday Boeing announced a 20% cut in the planned production of its successful 737 MAX jet, following the recent Lion Air and Ethiopian accidents.

The US planemaker said that it has decided to temporarily move from an output of 52 planes per month to 42 planes per month, starting in mid-April.

In a statement, the company said that it is "making progress" on the 737 MAX software update that will prevent accidents like these from happening again.

According to a preliminary report of the Ethiopian accident investigation, in both flights the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) - an automated safety feature designed to prevent the plane from entering into a stall - responded erroneously.

"We have the responsibility to eliminate this risk," Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg said on Friday.
