Apple: to develop its own chips for its computers

(CercleFinance.com) - It was a rumour that had been going around for a few months, indeed years, although this time it's official: the Apple group is going to gradually abandon Intel processors for its computers, in favor of "home-made" chips based on an ARM architecture.

This doesn't sound like much of a big deal at first, but it's a real revolution for the Apple brand: it's been more than 14 years since Apple switched from Power PC processors to Intel processors. They equipped the entire range of the brand's computers, such as the Macbook, the Mac Mini and the iMac. Called "Apple Silicon", these chips will enable the group to manage the power and autonomy of its devices itself.

The first "ARM" devices are expected by the end of the year. The transition between the two platforms should take place over a few quarters.

With this operation, Apple is aligning its "PC" policy with its "smartphone" strategy: iPhones (like iPads) work with chips "made in Cupertino". Therefore this change will also potentially allow its users to use iOS and iPadOS games and applications directly on the Mac.

Amongst analysts, Wells Fargo speaks of an "historic day" for Apple, and has raised its target price for the stock. The broker, which maintains an "Overweight" rating, has therefore raised its TP from 385 dollars to 400 dollars (current price: 365 dollars).
