Apple: designer Jony Ive leaves to start own firm

(CercleFinance.com) - Jony Ive, the star designer behind Apple's revival, is leaving the company to form an independent design firm which will have Apple as one of its main clients, the tech giant said on Thursday.

Apple's chief design officer will leave the company later this year, although he will continue to work closely, on a range of projects, with Apple, the group said.

Jony Ive was behind 1998's groundbreaking iMac, also involved in the design of the latest iPhones, as well as the architecture of the Apple Park.

Other design team leaders Evans Hankey, head of industrial design, and Alan Dye, head of human interface design, are set to replace him.

Apple also announced yesterday that Sabih Khan, a 24-year Apple veteran, has been named to the company's executive team as senior vice president of operations.

In his new role, Khan will be in charge of Apple's supply chain, ensuring product quality and overseeing planning, procurement, manufacturing and logistics.
