Amazon: raises minimum wage to 15 dollars per hour

(CercleFinance.com) - Amazon said on Tuesday that it would raise its minimum wage for all employees to 15 dollars an hour after the group had been criticized for its wage policies for several months.

The online retailer said the increase would take effect from 1 November and that it would also maintain healthcare benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, as well as life and disability insurance and up to 20 weeks of paid parental leave.

The increase will benefit over 250,000 Amazon employees, as well as over 100,000 seasonal employees who will be hired this holiday, the company said.

"We listened to our critics, thought hard about what we wanted to do, and decided we want to lead," said Jeff Bezos, Amazon Founder and CEO.

Senator Bernie Sanders has been criticizing Amazon for months, saying that the company doesn't pay its entry-level employees, usually working at fulfillment centers, a fair wage.

The current hourly rate of 7.25 dollars was set nearly a decade ago

Amazon has also raised its minimum wage for UK employees to 10.50 pounds an hour in the London area and to 9.50 pounds an hour for all other parts of the country.
