Alcoa: launches carbon-free technology with Rio Tinto

(CercleFinance.com) - Alcoa and Rio Tinto have launched a new joint venture for the commercialisation of a technology eliminating greenhouse-gas emissions from the aluminium smelting process.

The newly-formed Elysis, which will be headquartered in Montreal with another research facility in Quebec, will license the technology so that it can be used to retrofit existing smelters or build new facilities, the companies said.

The beginning of the sale of the technology package is planned for 2024.

Alcoa and Rio Tinto plan to invest 55 million Canadian dollars (around 43 million US dollars) over the next three years, while Canada and Quebec will each invest 60 million Canadian dollars in the project.

Apple will provide a further investment of 13 million Canadian dollars.
