Norsk Hydro: 'no indication' of pollution at Brazilian plant
(CercleFinance.com) - Norwegian aluminium producer Hydro said there are no indications of bauxite residue leaks or negative environmental impact at its Brazilian alumina refinery after heavy rainfall last month.
On 17 February, the company used the Canal Velho to discharge excess rainwater from the factory area into the river, although the water was pH treated before it was released, Hydro said.
However, the rainwater from the refinery area may contain bauxite dust and traces of caustic soda, the firm said.
Hydro said it that it is committed to establishing a complete overview of the situation and that it notified environmental authorities of Para, SEMAS, throughout.
