Unilever: partners with British startup on microalgae food

(CercleFinance.com) - Consumer goods giant Unilever said it will work with British biotech start-up Algenuity to explore the potential use of microalgae protein in its plant-based food portfolio.

Under the terms of the agreement, Algenuity will work with Unilever's R&D team to find ways of bringing foods made with microalgae to the market.

In particular the companies plan to investigate the advantages of chlorella vulgaris, a antioxidant, vitamin, and mineral-rich source of protein and fibre, that has a low carbon footprint.

The move comes as Unilever's plant-based products now represent about a third of the company's portfolio, including vegan and dairy-free options for Hellmann's mayonnaise and Magnum ice creams.
