Airbus: new weather satellites reach milestone
(CercleFinance.com) - Airbus announced on Thursday that the integration process of its new generation weather satellite has reached a new crucial stage in the last few days.
In a crane operation at its satellite centre in Friedrichshafen, Germany, the six-metre high structure of the first 'B' model satellite in the MetOp-SG series was integrated with its propulsion system.
The propulsion system, built by Airbus in Stevenage (UK), carries 760 kg of hydrazine to provide attitude control and stationkeeping during the satellite's mission.
Above all, it will enable a controlled re-entry over the South Pacific at the end of the satellite's mission.
Implemented by the European Space Agency, the MetOp-SG fleet is to have six satellites, with a first launch currently scheduled for early 2024.
