Airbus: launches hybrid propulsion system for helicopters
(CercleFinance.com) - Airbus Helicopters and the French Ministry of Transport (DGAC) have announced the launch of a research project to demonstrate the use of a hybrid propulsion system on board helicopters.
This initiative will lead to the first flight of a demonstrator in 2020.
The demonstration kit will include an electric motor supplied by Thales, a battery developed by Airbus Defense and Space and electric converters supplied by ADENEO.
It will be installed and piloted on a single-engine H130 test rig helicopter. The project will be financed jointly by DGAC and Airbus Helicopters.
"Further evolutions of the same technology could also pave the way to a significant reduction in fuel consumption and sound levels, further increasing the acceptance of helicopters in urban environments," said Bruno Even, Airbus Helicopters CEO.
