Philips: improves its cardic imaging system

(CercleFinance.com) - Philips announced on Wednesday that it has made a number of improvements to its imaging and navigation system for treating cardiac arrhythmias.

The Dutch healthcare equipment specialist said it has increased the performance of the guided therapy system, which enables doctors to "navigate" through the heart using detailed 3D images.

In particular, the company says it has improved the device's cardiac arrhythmia ablation procedures.

Unlike traditional methods such as conventional radiography or CT scanning, the Philips KODEX-EPD System relies on single-use electromagnetic sensors, used in conjunction with electrophysiology catheters, to provide detailed anatomical information of the heart.

The system has now been installed in over 40 healthcare centres and has been used to treat more than 1,500 patients with atrial fibrillation, the most common heart rhythm disorder, Philips said.
