SES: connectivity contract with Mexican government

(CercleFinance.com) - On Thursday SES announced that it has been selected by the Mexican government as part of an initiative to democratise broadband Internet access.

As part of the project, the federal authorities have selected SES to deploy more than 1,100 Wi-Fi access points from its SES-17 Ka-band satellite.

The measure, which is called "Internet for All", aims to provide free Wi-Fi access points in public areas.

These high-speed connectivity links will be installed in places deemed "strategic" such as schools and hospitals, especially in the most remote areas of the country.

According to the Mexican Institute of Statistics, 66.4% of the country's households had access to broadband Internet in 2021, but this percentage drops to 32.6% in the mountainous region of Chiapas.

The Mexican federal government aims to deploy a total of 140,000 free Wi-Fi access points throughout the country.
