Vodafone: new tech now tracks vehicles to within centimetres
(CercleFinance.com) - Vodafone is testing new technology that can track vehicles, drones and cargo remotely to within centimetres, in a move that could precede the mass adoption of autonomous vehicles and flying objects.
The British mobile phone giant said on Tuesday that it has successfully used a precision positioning technology to remotely track a vehicle to within just 10 centimetres of its location, an improvement of more than three metres compared with current standard satellite-based systems.
The operator has said that it is collaborating with global positioning provider Sapcorda, using its own Internet of Things (IoT) platform, currently the largest in the world, with 118 million connections.
Pinpoint accuracy is considered to be critical to the mass adoption of autonomous vehicles, not just on the road but in factories, airports, and any site where machines are working, Vodafone said.
The new technology could, for example, enable an autonomous truck to detect cyclists, whose e-bikes can automatically transmit their position, the company said.
Vodafone said it plans to offer its customers applications that do all this.
