Unilever: to test four-day working week in New Zealand

(CercleFinance.com) - Unilever said that it is going to test a four-day working week at full pay at its New Zealand offices, in a move that could lead to a broader adoption of the scheme in the future.

The consumer-goods giant said all of the participating employees will still be paid 100% of their salaries, while working 80% of the time

To facilitate the move to the four-day logic, Unilever will train some of its employees to its "Agile" project management method, which eliminates work that adds no value and unnecessary bureaucracy, it said.

"Momentum for a four-day work week is growing in the wake of the Covid-19 upheaval of standard working practices," said Nick Bangs, the managing director of Unilever New Zealand.

Unilever will be working with the University of Technology Business School in Sydney to measure qualitative results of the trial, which will run from December 2020 to December 2021.

While the trial is limited to New Zealand only at this stage, Unilever said it will explore its implications on a broader scale.

Unilever has just 81 employees in New Zealand.
