Shell: company veteran appointed chief executive

(CercleFinance.com) - Shell on Thursday appointed Wael Sawan, a company veteran who, until now, has headed the group's integrated gas and renewables business, as its new chief executive.

The Anglo-Dutch oil giant's new number one will replace Ben van Beurden, who will step down at the end of the year after over eight years at the helm.

Wael Sawan, a Lebanese-Canadian citizen, grew up in Dubai and has spent his entire 25-year career with Shell in a number of senior positions in Europe, Africa and Asia.

After serving as director of the upstream business, he eventually joined the group's executive committee three years ago.

The announcement was warmly welcomed by investors, with Shell shares up 1.5% this morning in London, the fourth biggest winner in the FTSE 100 index.
