Rio Tinto: spodumene production begins in Quebec
(CercleFinance.com) - Rio Tinto has begun production of spodumene concentrate, a mineral used in the manufacture of lithium for batteries, at its Rio Tinto Fer et Titane (RTFT) demonstration plant in Sorel-Tracy, Canada.
On an industrial scale the plant will demonstrate a new spodumene concentration process offering lithium oxide grades and recoveries well above the industry average.
The process offers the environmental advantage of not using chemicals and generating only dry inert residues.
The demonstration plant was commissioned in June following successful laboratory testing of the new process and the production of a first tonne of spodumene concentrate in July 2022.
