Rio Tinto: to begin copper mining at Kennecott
(CercleFinance.com) - Rio Tinto has committed 55 million dollars to development capital to begin underground mining and expand copper production at the Kennecott mine in Utah, US.
This will initially focus on an area known as the Lower Commercial Skarn (LCS), which is expected to provide approximately 30 kt (kilotonnes) of high quality copper until 2027, in parallel with the open pit operations.
First ore is expected to be produced in early 2023, with full production in the second half of the year, the group says.
Rio Tinto also says that battery-powered underground electric vehicles are being tested at Kennecott.
