Rio Tinto: towards new process for low-carbon steel
(CercleFinance.com) - Rio Tinto has announced that it is developing an innovative technology to produce low carbon steel.
The mining group will now use sustainable raw biomass instead of coking coal in the steelmaking process.
Developed over the past decade, the process is currently patent pending and being tested in a small-scale pilot plant.
If this - and larger-scale tests - prove successful, the process could be adopted more widely. It could then provide a cost-effective way to produce low-carbon steel from our Pilbara iron ore, Rio Tinto said.
Rio Tinto researchers are working with the multi-disciplinary Microwave Process Engineering Group at the University of Nottingham to develop the process further.
