Rio Tinto: chairman quits after Juukan Gorge is blown up

(CercleFinance.com) - Rio Tinto chairman Simon Thompson has said to the board that he will not seek re-election as a non-executive director at the 2022 AGMs of Rio Tinto plc and Rio Tinto Limited.

The departure of its chairman comes after 2020 was marked by the scandal of the destruction of a historic site of the Australian Aboriginal community in Juukan Gorge by dynamite.

As chairman, he admits being ultimately responsible for the failures that led to this tragic event.

Sam Laidlaw and Simon McKeon, who are respectively independent directors of Rio Tinto plc and Rio Tinto Limited, will jointly lead the search for a successor to replace Simon Thompson as chairman.

In addition, Michael L'Estrange, a non-executive director, will retire from the Board after these 2021 AGMs.
