Suez: gets involved in water desalination in Sri Lanka
(CercleFinance.com) - Today Suez announced that it has been awarded a new contract by the National Water Management Authority of Sri Lanka (NWSDB) to design, build and operate the first reverse osmosis seawater desalination plant in Jaffna, the capital of the country's Northern Province.
With a capacity of 24,000 m3, the plant, partly financed by the Asian Development Bank, will be designed and built over a period of two and a half years, to then be operated and maintained by Suez for seven years. The plant will supply drinking water to 300,000 inhabitants of the city of Jaffna and the surrounding urban and rural areas.
The project is part of the Jaffna-Kilinochchi Water Supply and Sanitation Program developed by the Government of Sri Lanka, which aims to improve the amount of drinking water available in water-poor areas and to provide safe drinking water to the people of Jaffna, one of the most densely populated cities in Sri Lanka.
