Arkema: enquiry into Crosby accident in the US.
(CercleFinance.com) - The Chemical Safety Board (CSB), an independent US federal chemical authority, has opened an investigation into the cause of the accident at the Arkema site in Crosby, Texas, which was ravaged by the consequences of the tropical storm Harvey.
The Texan plant of the French chemical group produced peroxides, compounds that are stable only when they are refrigerated. However, the site's main electricity supply was cut off by the floods, and the emergency power supply does not seem to have resisted either. This resulted in the fires and explosions that occurred in Crosby yesterday.
CSB investigators will be on site as soon as weather conditions and emergency operations permit. For the time being, they have asked Arkema for documentation regarding pre-accident site processes, the characteristics of stored and used chemicals and emergency procedures.
