EDF: closure of Fessenheim plant

(CercleFinance.com) - EDF says that it has submitted an application to the regulator (ASN) and to France's minister in charge of the energy and solidarity transition, request in which it has requested approval for the termination of operations and permanent shutdown of both reactors at Fessenheim nuclear power plant (NPP), scheduled for 22 February and 30 June 2020.

This submission follows on from the signing, on 27 September, by the State and EDF, of a protocol agreement whereby the State will compensate EDF for the plant's early closure, resulting from the limitation of nuclear power output set by the law of 17 August 2015.

Under the terms of the protocol, the compensation takes the form of initial payments, which are to total close to 400 million euros, and subsequent payments corresponding to profits that would have been made by Fessenheim's future production volumes.
