EDF: an unfavorable decision from the ASN.

(CercleFinance.com) - EDF has had a big setback, having been ordered by the French nuclear safety authority (ASN) to temporary halt of the four production turbines at the Tricastin nuclear power station in the Drôme region.

The French nuclear power regulator has asked the electricity giant to reinforce a short section of the dyke north of the power station, on the edge of the Donzère-Mondragon canal.

While undertaking to comply with this decision "as soon as possible", EDF has said that it deplores this decision and does not agree with the ASN that a shutdown is necessary. The group has hence proposed it with a two-stage plan. First, works to strengthen the dyke to ensure it resists in a situation of an earthquake; these works will initially be completed within a month.

Furthermore, without waiting for these reinforcement works, additional protection to the existing perimeter protection wall is already being installed and will be operational within a few days. EDF explained that this system guarantees that there will be no water leaking into the reactors in the event of an earthquake over the construction period.
