Essilor: planned merger with Luxottica still on.
(CercleFinance.com) - Essilor reacted immediately to the European Commission's announcement at the end of the afternoon that it was opening of an investigation into its merger with the Italian group Luxottica.
In a statement issued after trading, the ophthalmic equipment specialist said that the planned merger is still on the cards. It is also not that surprised by Brussels' investigations, considering them as expected "given the size of the companies involved".
Beyond this thorough investigation, which the European Commission was justified in by the need to ensure that higher prices are avoided or restrictions of choice for opticians, and ultimately for consumers, Luxottica and Essilor have expressed their confidence "in the fact that Phase II will be concluded in due course".
