Thales: leads space program for in-orbit services
(CercleFinance.com) - Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), says it has been selected by the European Commission to lead the EROSS IOD (European Robotic Orbital Support Services In Orbit Demonstrator) program, which is dedicated to On-Orbit Servicing.
The program aims to validate the technologies needed for future space robotics operations to make the use of space more sustainable, by extending the service life of satellites, while improving their performance and reducing space debris.
In this context, an initial European demonstration mission is planned by 2026.
Thales says that in-orbit service spacecraft - "space troubleshooters" - represent a real paradigm shift for the space sector as future systems can be maintained in orbit and continue to evolve over time.
Nothing stratospheric about Thales shares this morning though - an hour into trading they are down about 1.5%, underperforming a pretty flat market in Paris.
