Thales: two contracts for Thales Alenia Space with ESA
(CercleFinance.com) - Thales Group today announces that Thales Alenia Space (a joint venture between Thales - a majority stake, and Leonardo - a minority stake) has signed two study contracts with the European Space Agency (ESA), as part of a joint ESA- NASA study for the international Mars Sample Return mission.
"This latest mission to the Red Planet is designed to bring samples from the surface of Mars back to Earth. It represents a major new step forward in our exploration of the Solar System, its formation, and especially in our study of Mars and questions about its possible habitability," Thales said.
Thales Alenia Space, as prime contractor, will define the general architecture and preliminary design of two pieces of equipment for this mission, including the module dedicated to the recovery of samples. Thales Alenia Space will also be in charge of characterising the main equipment, which is then supplied by a European industrial consortium.
