Michelin: to produce butadiene with Ifpen and Axens

(CercleFinance.com) - Michelin, IFPEN and Axens announce the construction of the first industrial-scale prototype of a plant producing butadiene from bioethanol in France.

The BioButterfly project aims to produce butadiene from ethanol extracted from biomass (plants). This aims to produce innovative synthetic rubbers that are more environmentally friendly.

"Worldwide, manufacturers consumer over twelve million tonnes of butadiene every year of which about 40% is used to make tyres," the group said.

This facility will start to be built at the end of 2019 and is set to be completed a year later, at Michelin's site in Bassens, near Bordeaux.
