TotalEnergies: biodiversity protected in Russian Arctic

(CercleFinance.com) - On Thursday TotalEnergies has committed itself to the protection of biodiversity under the Arctic LNG 2 project, a vast liquefied natural gas (LNG) field in the Russian Arctic.

The French energy group says that it has carried out several societal and environmental impact studies with different project partners in order to define a set of actions to be implemented.

Total says that this aims to minimise the project's environmental and societal footprint, while having a positive impact on biodiversity and local communities.

These measures will then be monitored by third-party institutions, including all international credit agencies.

TotalEnergies has a direct 10% stake in the project, alongside Novatek (60%), in which it holds a 19.4% stake, CNOOC (10%), CNPC (10%) and the Mitsui-Jogmec consortium (10%).

The first LNG train is expected to supply international markets as from 2023, with each of the project's three trains having a capacity of 6.6 million tonnes per year.
