Carrefour: potential redundancies at hypermarkets ahead?

(CercleFinance.com) - According to Le Figaro, Carrefour would like to negotiate some 1,500 layoffs at its hypermarkets via contractual terminations.

The newspaper reports that the retail giant's management could open negotiations to reach an agreement for a collective contractual termination at its central works council meetings, set to be held today and tomorrow (27 and 28 March).

Contrary to a redundancy plan, this will enable the group to lay off employees without having to justify an economic motive. However, none of the departures may be forced, the paper points out.

Citing trade union sources, Le Figaro understands that up to 1,500 jobs at Carrefour's hypermarket segment, which has a total of 60,000 employees, could be concerned by these measures.

However, the share price seemed to be resisting this news in Paris this morning, just managing to keep its head above water.
