Nokia: picked by Orange Belgium to roll out 5G

(CercleFinance.com) - Finnish telecom gear maker Nokia has been selected by Orange Belgium to upgrade its existing 2G/3G/4G radio network by 2023 and start rolling out 5G, the Belgian telecom operator said on Friday.

Orange Belgium said its 5G radio network will first be associated with its existing core network - provided by Ericsson - which is already able to work with 5G infrastructure.

In parallel, Orange Belgium is preparing for the future evolution of its core network to support "stand-alone" 5G and offer 5G end-to-end functionalities, such as network slicing, it added.

Nokia has been chosen following a thorough competitive process, based on technological, operational and financial criteria, the Belgian unit of Orange said.

Nokia also said on Friday that its cloud-native subscriber data management (SDM) software has been chosen by Telefonica UK to enhance the security and reliability of the operator's networks, including 5G.
