BBVA: Onur Genç named as next CEO
(CercleFinance.com) - BBVA has named Turkish executive Onur Genç as its chief executive officer on Thursday, underlining the growing importance of emerging markets for the Spanish banking group.
BBVA's board of directors has approved the succession plan expecting Onur Genç, who is currently the CEO of US banking franchise BBVA Compass and US country manager, to replace Carlos Torres Vila as Group CEO as from 31 December 2018.
At the Spanish bank, the 44-year old executive - who has worked at McKinsey & Company for 13 years - has rapidly been promoted in the group.
He joined BBVA Turkish unit Garanti in 2012 as executive vice president for retail banking. In 2015 he was named deputy CEO of the Turkish lender, assuming wholesale banking responsibilities as well.
Since January, Genç has been CEO of BBVA Compass and country manager for BBVA US.
