Bayer: to invest 50 million dollars in 'xeno' organs

(CercleFinance.com) - Bayer said on Thursday that it plans to invest 50 million dollars in a startup company working on xenotransplantation, i.
e. the transplantation of organs from one species to another.

The move is part of a 100 million dollar financing led by Germany's Fresenius for eGenesis, a biotech firm utilizing gene editing technologies for the development of human-compatible organs.

eGenesis is trying to help solve the shortage of human organs, with currently between 1.5 million to 2 million people on the organ transplant waiting list globally.

At present, the pig is considered as the most suitable donor for humans.

Bayer has already invested in innovative medtech firms such as Casebia (genetic diseases), BlueRock (lost tissue function), as well as Pyxis (cancer prevention).
