Lufthansa: airberlin has filed for provisional insolvency.

(CercleFinance.com) - airberlin, Germany's second largest airline, has filed for provisional insolvency, which will enable its parent company Lufthansa and the German government to support its restructuring.

In specific terms, today airberlin filed a provisional insolvency proceeding in self-administration at the local court of Berlin.

Lufthansa said that all aircraft - currently operated by airberlin under a wet lease agreement for Eurowings and Austrian Airlines - will continue operating as before.

Lufthansa - which has started negotiations to take over parts of the airberlin group and is exploring the possibility of hiring additional staff - intends to conclude these negotiations "successfully."
