Volkswagen: when cars become software products
(CercleFinance.com) - Volkswagen has announced the deployment of its new strategy, Accelerate, aimed at improving software-driven mobility.
In this strategy, the integration of software into the vehicle and the digital customer experience will become crucial key skills, the German carmaker says.
Volkswagen plans to transform the car into a software product with updates scheduled every 12 weeks from the summer of 2021. These will enable the vehicle to remain up to date throughout its life cycle and improve its performance with new functions.
Future generations of vehicles will thus be produced in very few versions. The individual configuration will no longer be defined at the time of purchase. The vehicles will indeed have all the options and customers will be able to activate them later, on demand, using the vehicle's digital ecosystem. This will significantly reduce the complexity of production, VW believes.
The company points out that it has devoted around 16 billion euros to investments in future trends in electric mobility, hybridisation and digitisation through to 2025.
