Siemens: shore power installation at port in Germany

(CercleFinance.com) - On Wednesday Siemens announced that it has been selected by Seehafen Kiel, the operator of the port of Kiel, Germany to build a shore power installation.

The industrial group has been commissioned by the operator of this port on the Baltic Sea in northern Germany to design a 50/60 Hz system for cruise ships and ferries.

A second 50 Hz system is to be used solely for ferries.

While ships in port are usually powered by their diesel engines, the installation of an electrical infrastructure at the quayside makes it possible to avoid this particularly polluting solution.

The Siemens installation, which is set to be one of the largest in Europe, is expected to supply up to six ships simultaneously with green electricity when it is commissioned next year.

The total investment is estimated at around 17 million euros.
