(CercleFinance.com) - Daimler said on Wednesday it had an "excellent" second quarter, with significant earnings growth at its flagship Mercedes-Benz cars division.

Overall group earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) significantly increased to 3.7 billion euros in the past quarter, from 3.3 billion euros in the same period one year ago, the company said in a statement.

The German carmaker said net profit was stable at 2.5 billion euros, while revenue grew by 7% to 41.2 billion euros.

Unit sales were significantly above prior-year level at 822,500 vehicles, up 8%.

Mercedes, the group's unit for luxury vehicles, in particular set a new record at 595,200 vehicles, up 9%.

Looking ahead, Daimler assumes that revenue will increase significantly in 2017, with group EBIT also increasing "significantly."
