BMW: joins forces with Microsoft on manufacturing platform
(CercleFinance.com) - Germany's BMW and US software giant Microsoft are joining forces to launch a faster, cost-effective platform for the manufacturing sector.
The strategic partnership, announced at the Hannover Messe trade fair, will focus on sharing smart factory solutions across the automotive and manufacturing sectors, the carmaker said.
The "Open Manufacturing Platform" (OMP) is designed to break down barriers such as complex, proprietary systems that create data silos and which slow down productivity.
It is expected to support the development of solutions that will be shared by participants across broader sectors.
By the end of 2019 there is expected to be an initial group of between 4 and 6 partners, BMW said.
