BMW: EU investigation on breach of antitrust laws

(CercleFinance.com) - The European Commission announces that it has opened an in-depth investigation to ascertain whether BMW, Daimler and VW (Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche) have colluded with each other, breaching EU antitrust laws regarding competition issues in the development and deployment of technologies to reduce emissions from petrol- and diesel-engine passenger cars.

Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, in charge of competition policy, said: "The Commission is investigating whether BMW, Daimler and VW agreed not to compete against each other on the development and roll-out of important systems to reduce harmful emissions from petrol and diesel passenger cars. These technologies aim at making passenger cars less damaging to the environment. If proven, this collusion may have denied consumers the opportunity to buy less polluting cars, despite the technology being available to the manufacturers."

In particular, the Commission is examining whether these companies have colluded with each other so as to limit the development and deployment of certain emission control systems for cars sold in the European Economic Area.

These are selective catalytic reduction systems, which reduce the harmful emissions of nitrous oxides from diesel-engine passenger cars with and "Otto" particle filters ("OPF"), which reduce the emissions of harmful particles from petrol-engine cars.
