Nestlé: signs European pact to tackle plastic pollution
(CercleFinance.com) - Nestlé on Friday announced the signing of the European Plastics Pact, in a move aimed at making 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable and cutting the use of virgin plastic by one third by 2025.
The pact - a joint initiative by companies, NGOs and governments - targets at least a 20% reduction in virgin plastic products.
The agreement aims to raise collection and recycling capacity in Europe for plastic packaging by at least 25%, while boosting the use of recycled plastics in packaging to an average of at least 30%.
Nestlé recently announced an investment of over 1.5 billion Swiss francs (around 1.4 billion euros) to create a market for food-grade recycled plastics.
The Swiss food giant has also launched a 250 million Swiss franc fund focusing on start-ups that develop packaging innovation.
