Nestlé: expands plant-based offering with new 'burgers'
(CercleFinance.com) - Nestlé is launching new plant-based burgers and meat grounds in the US and in Switzerland, as the Swiss agri-food giant tries to meet growing demand for meat alternatives.
In the United States, its Sweet Earth Foods unit - which it acquired in 2017 - announced the launch of two products, the Awesome Burger and Awesome Grounds, both made with yellow pea protein.
In Switzerland, Nestlé is introducing the Garden Gourmet Incredible Burger and the new Garden Gourmet Incredible Mince, made from soy and wheat protein, and mince from soy protein.
Both contain natural plant extracts - beetroot, carrot, and bell pepper - and vegetable fats including coconut oil, with the latter being "just as versatile and juicy as ground beef," Nestlé adds.
The move comes as fast food giant McDonald's said it will be conducting a 12-week test of a new plant-based burger called the P.L.T., which stands for plant, lettuce and tomato, in 28 restaurants in Canada.
