ABB: picked by NASA to supply space telescope cameras

(CercleFinance.com) - NASA has chosen Switzerland's ABB and Canada's Nuvu to deliver cameras for a future telescope that will capture spaceborne images of planets outside the solar system, the companies said on Wednesday.

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, NASA's 3.2 billion dollar future space observatory, is due to launch in 2025, in the search for other earth-like planets.

The project will carry two instruments: one to study dark energy distribution in the cosmos, and an exoplanet imaging system that will include two high sensitivity cameras developed by ABB and Nuvu.

As extra-solar planetary systems are extremely difficult to observe from long distances, the mission should be 100 to 1000 times more powerful for imaging exo-planets than what is achieved on the ground today.
