Roche: launches new high-volume coronavirus test
(CercleFinance.com) - Swiss healthcare giant Roche said on Tuesday it will launch a new high-volume antigen test for coronavirus as governments and healthcare systems are currently under pressure to increase their testing capacity.
The test, which uses nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swab samples from patients, can provide test results in 18 minutes, with an output of up to 300 tests per hour, the drugmaker said.
The test is planned to be made available at the end of the year for markets accepting the CE Mark. Roche said it also intends to file for an emergency use authorisation from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
An antigen test detects proteins which are structural or functional components of a pathogen, providing a simple "yes/no" answer on the presence of the pathogen in the patient sample.
