Roche: to begin Phase III trial of Covid-19 treatment
(CercleFinance.com) - Roche is starting a late-stage clinical trial of its Actemra/RoActemra arthritis drug in hospitalised patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia.
The Swiss drugmaker said that it is working with the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to begin a Phase III trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of its drug plus standard of care in hospitalised adult patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia compared to placebo plus standard of care.
The study is expected to begin enrolling patients in early April, with a target of approximately 330 patients globally.
"Roche has taken this decision following the use and integration into guidelines of Actemra's Chinese treatment to reduce lung inflammation amongst the most seriously affected patients", analysts at Oddo BHF commented this morning.
A small-scale Chinese study that enrolled 20 people showed a reduction in fever and a necessary oxygenation for 75% of patients, the broker said.
