Roche: US recommends HPV testing for cancer screening

(CercleFinance.com) - New guidelines for cervical cancer screening recommend for the first time human papillomavirus (HPV) testing alone for women aged between 21 and 65.

The recommendations from the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), part of the US government's Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, indicate there is a "high certainty that the net benefit is substantial" for high-risk HPV testing every five years for women from 30 to 65 years old.

It also retains prior recommendations for Pap testing alone every three years for women from 21 to 65 and co-testing (Pap plus HPV) for women of 30-65.

Roche - whose cobas HPV tests are approved by the FDA - commended the decision. Its shares are currently down 0.3% at 242.1 Swiss francs in Zurich.
